About the D8
The d8 is an octahedron — two four-sided pyramids joined at the base. Every face has an equal 12.5% chance, and the average roll is 4.5.
In D&D 5e it may be the single most-rolled damage die: most one-handed martial weapons, the most popular ranged weapon, and a stack of well-known spells all deal 1d8. Six of the thirteen classes use a d8 hit die.
What Uses a D8?
- Martial weapons: Longswords, rapiers, warhammers, and battleaxes all deal 1d8 one-handed.
- Longbow: The classic ranged weapon deals 1d8 piercing damage.
- Sacred Flame: The cleric cantrip deals 1d8 radiant damage, scaling to 4d8 at level 17.
- Spiritual Weapon: Deals 1d8 + spellcasting modifier as a bonus action.
- Hit dice: Bards, clerics, druids, monks, rogues, and warlocks all use d8 hit dice.

A d8 averages exactly one point more than a d6 (4.5 vs 3.5) — the gap between a shortsword and a longsword is smaller than most players think.

The average of one d8 is 4.5 — faces 1 through 8 are equally likely, and (1+2+…+8) ÷ 8 = 4.5. With a typical +3 damage modifier, a longsword hit averages 7.5.
