About Rolling 2d6

Rolling two six-sided dice and adding them together is the most common dice mechanic in gaming. Unlike a single die, 2d6 does not produce a flat distribution: there are 36 possible combinations, and middle totals come up far more often than the extremes.

A 7 is the most likely total (1 roll in 6), because six different combinations produce it. Snake eyes (2) and boxcars (12) each appear only once in 36 rolls. This bell-shaped curve is why 2d6 games feel less swingy than d20 games.

What Uses 2d6?

  • Board games: Monopoly movement, Catan resource production, and backgammon all run on 2d6.
  • Craps: The entire casino game is built on the 2d6 distribution — 7 on the come-out roll wins.
  • D&D greatsword: The greatsword and greataxe debate: 2d6 averages 7, more consistent than 1d12’s 6.5.
  • PbtA RPGs: Powered by the Apocalypse games (Apocalypse World, Dungeon World, Monster of the Week) roll 2d6 + stat, with 7-9 a partial success and 10+ a full success.
  • Traveller: The classic sci-fi RPG resolves nearly everything with 2d6 against a target of 8+.

D6 Roller FAQ

What is the most common 2d6 roll?

Seven. Six of the 36 possible combinations total 7 (1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2, 6+1), giving it a 16.67% chance — the peak of the 2d6 bell curve.

What are the odds of rolling doubles on 2d6?

One in six (16.67%). There are six doubles (1-1 through 6-6) among the 36 equally likely combinations. Any specific double, like snake eyes, is 1 in 36 (2.78%).

Is 2d6 better than 1d12 for damage?

On average, yes: 2d6 averages 7 versus 6.5 for a d12, and it is more consistent — two-thirds of 2d6 rolls land between 5 and 9. The d12 gives you better odds of hitting the maximum (8.33% for a 12 versus 2.78% on 2d6).

What does 7-9 mean in Powered by the Apocalypse games?

PbtA games read 2d6 + stat as three bands: 6 or less is a miss, 7-9 is a partial success with a complication, and 10+ is a full success. With a +1 stat you hit 7+ about 72% of the time.
