D12 Dice Roller

Roll a twelve-sided die online — the barbarian’s die, beloved for greataxe crits and rolled too rarely for its own good.

About the D12

The d12 is a dodecahedron with twelve pentagonal faces. It rolls beautifully — nearly as round as a d20 — and every face has an equal 8.33% chance, averaging 6.5.

It is famously the least-used die in D&D, appearing mainly where barbarians are involved. But when it shows up, it shows up big: no other single weapon die swings as hard on a critical hit.

What Uses a D12?

  • Greataxe: Deals 1d12 slashing — the signature d12 weapon, and 2d12 on a crit.
  • Barbarian hit die: Barbarians are the only 5e class with a d12 hit die: 7 hp per level on average.
  • Lance: Deals 1d12 piercing when charging on a mount.
  • Brutal Critical: High-level barbarians add up to three extra weapon dice on a crit — up to 5d12 with a greataxe.

D12 Probability

Each face of a d12 has an equal 8.33% chance. Common d12 rolls:

RollAverageRange
1d126.51–12
2d12 (greataxe crit)132–24
1d12+5 (raging barbarian)11.56–17

Greataxe (1d12) versus greatsword (2d6): the greatsword averages more (7 vs 6.5) and is more consistent, but the greataxe hits its maximum three times as often — and barbarian crit features only multiply weapon dice, favoring the d12.

D12 Roller FAQ

What uses a d12 in D&D?

The greataxe (1d12) and lance (1d12 when mounted) are the main weapons, and the barbarian is the only class with a d12 hit die. Barbarian features like Brutal Critical make the d12 swing even harder on crits.

Is a d12 or 2d6 better?

On raw average, 2d6 wins: 7 versus 6.5, with two-thirds of rolls landing between 5 and 9. The d12 is flat — every result 1-12 is equally likely — so it whiffs (1-2) and maxes (11-12) far more often. For barbarians, crit-focused builds favor the d12.

What is the average roll of a d12?

The average of one d12 is 6.5, with each face from 1 to 12 equally likely at 8.33%.
