About the 4d6 Drop Lowest Method

The 4d6 drop lowest method is the standard ability score generation method recommended in the D&D 5th Edition Player's Handbook. Here's how it works:

  1. Roll four six-sided dice (4d6)
  2. Discard the lowest die roll
  3. Add up the remaining three dice
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 six times to generate all six ability scores
  5. Assign these scores to your character's six abilities (STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA)

This method tends to create above-average characters since the minimum possible score is 3 (three 1s) and the maximum is 18 (three 6s), but the odds are weighted toward higher numbers by dropping the lowest die.

Understanding Ability Modifiers

In D&D 5e, each ability score provides a modifier that is applied to various rolls and checks. The modifier is calculated as follows:

Ability ScoreModifierAbility ScoreModifier
1-516-17+3
2-3-418-19+4
4-5-320-21+5
6-7-222-23+6
8-9-124-25+7
10-11+026-27+8
12-13+128-29+9
14-15+230+10

The formula for calculating a modifier is: (Ability Score - 10) ÷ 2, rounded down.

Applying Racial Bonuses

Most races in D&D 5e provide ability score increases. After generating your base ability scores, you can use the modifier inputs in our stat roller to apply these racial bonuses.

For example, if you are playing a Half-Orc (which gets +2 to Strength and +1 to Constitution), you would add those values to the respective ability scores after rolling.
